Yogyakarta nicknamed as Jogja or Yogya is one of the bustling cultural centres of Java, Indonesia. It was the ruling city of the Javanese empire of Mataram in the 16th and 17th century . Let’s dig up some interesting facts about this classical city Yogyakarta.

 

  • Yogyakarta renowned as a center of classical Javanese fine art and culture as well as a thriving and popular tourist destination in Java Island.

 

  • Between the year 1946-1949, Yogyakarta was once the capital of Indonesia due to the condition that Jakarta was occupied by Dutch.

 

  • Yogyakarta has been named as the World Batik City by the World Crafts Council (WCC) on 2014.

 

  • If you spend more than 2 days in Yogyakarta, you should visit some attraction that located around the city such as Rafting at Progo River or Caving at Cave Jomblang.

 

  • One of its main attraction, Borobudur Temple, held a yearly festival called Lantern Festival that happens only on Vesak day. This event already attracted thousands visitor from all over the world.

 

  • The local dishes are unique and definitely worth trying. Don’t miss a chance to try Gudeg, Brongkos, Manggut Lele, Bakpia and Kipo.

 

  • Do take precaution when walking in the city as it can get crowded and traffic is brutal. Make sure to look around before crossing the street.
