Nglanggeran

A Village Beneath an Ancient Sumptuous Mountain

Within the Gunungkidul Regency in Yogyakarta Province lies the charming Desa Wisata Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran, or simply Desa Wisata Nglanggeleran (Nglanggeleran Tourism Village). Once you step your foot in the area, you will be greeted by super friendly locals who will introduce you to their cultures and traditions. Is there any better way to delve deeper into the heart of another culture?

The history of the establishment of this village began in 1999 when a youth organization for the village known as Karang Taruna Desa Nglanggeleran started to do various activities in the village, such as planting trees. In 2007, a Village Tourism Management Agency (BPDW) was then established by the local administration.

The village received an award from the ASEAN Community Based Tourism (CBT) Award in January 2017. Since then, many tourists and organizations from across the globe flocked there to see what all the hype was about. Here is where our wanderlust took us on a journey of revelations and new insights into other cultures and traditions.

Get There

The village is located around 20 km away from Wonosari District and around 25 km away from Yogyakarta. No public transport service is available, so it is best to use your own vehicle or rent a personal vehicle. If you opt to rent a personal vehicle, the price could range from IDR 250,000 (no driver) to over IDR 600,000 (with driver) per 12 hours. If you are a foreigner, it would be best to rent a vehicle that comes with a driver. This map towards this village is also available on Google Maps under the name ‘Desa Wisata Nglanggeran’.

It is best to explore the village itself on foot or using a motorcycle. When traveling a bit outside the village, such as the Api Purba Volcano, Nglanggeran Pond or Kedung Kandang Waterfall, it would be best to travel using a motorcycle or personal vehicle.
