Dieng Kulon

Also known as Banjarnegara's Tourism Village, Dieng Kulon is where all arts and handicrafts around Wonosobo's shopping centers & galleries are crafted.

The origin of the name Dieng is still debatable. Some claim it comes from two Sanskrit words - Di (a mountain or a high place), and Hyang (heaven); if combined, it translates to 'a mountain where gods and goddesses reside'. Some believe that Dieng comes from an ancient language before Kawi, or from an old Sundanese; Di and Hyang, which means the House of Lords. Other sources say it comes from Javanese words; Adi and Aeng, which means strangely beautiful.

This village is located approximately 115 km (3-4 hours) from Yogyakarta and its airport, 105 km (2.5-3.5 hours) from Purwokerto and its train station, about 135 km (4-5 hours) from Semarang.

To reach Dieng Kulon Village, you need to make your way to Dieng Town, which is accessible from the bigger city of Wonosobo. There is no public transportation that goes straight to the town, so you need to use your own, preferably by renting a 7-seater car from Semarang and Yogyakarta, straight to Dieng. The cost of renting a car ranges from 250,000 (no driver) to 600,000 (with driver) per 12 hours. If you choose to go without a driver, the location of this village is also marked on online GPSes with a name "Dieng Kulon Tourism Village.

Once you reach Dieng Town’s main road, specifically at the signboard that says, “Welcome to Dieng”, go straight into town and take the first left, go past the Arjuna Temple Complex to reach Dieng Kulon Village. It’s about 750 m, a 9-minute walk from the signboard to the village.

The best way to get around the village itself is by walking, using a mountain bike, or a motorcycle. It's better to use a motorcycle or a private car when you want to get a little further, like for instance going to the Arjuna Temple complex, Kailasa Museum, Sikidang Crater, Warna Lake, Ratapan Angin Rock Formation, or Sikunir Hill.
